The Ugly Baby (A poem)

The Longest walk of his entire life
From the glass baby viewing window
To the recovery room
That held his wife

She had passed out right after the birth
So she hadn't seen The Ugliest Baby on Earth
He had wished and had hoped
That it would look better once cleaned up
But seeing it behind the window again
Well…… He almost threw up

How to tell her? He wondered
As he walked slowly down the hall
What could he say when she asked him.??
“It’s the most precious thing of all”

And by precious ---what he really meant
Was it looked kind of like Golem
Like a tragic figure hell sent

You know the creature
From Lord of the Rings
A wrinkled up miserable twisted creation
The worst of all things

The walk down the hall
Seemed like one of those horror movie scenes
The hallway kept stretching
Going on forever
Maybe that was a good thing

How could he tell her?
He thought and he thought
If she asked to see the baby
Would he respond “You had better not”

“Is he cute?” she would ask
“Not so much” He could reply
“Who does he look more like---You or me?”
“Ummmm…..Definitely not me”

How did it happen???
Did they have too much to drink that night???
What made his baby turn out so unright.
Was something else in the womb with it?
Did it lose a fight??
No matter which way you viewed it
It was a gruesome sight

His walk was nearing the end as he turned down the hall
Room 213…Maybe he would just call
He couldn’t face her…What could he say
“You will never believe it
The World’s Ugliest Baby was born here today”

I guess I could be worse
I mean at least the baby was complete
After all it had five toes
On all three of its feet

Its nose was inverted
The thing looked inside out
Its ears resembled Sloth from Goonies
He couldn’t figure it out

It’s teeth they were sharp
And its had 2 sets
The mere sight of it at feeding time
Made all the nurses upset

His cell phone went off
A series of texts
“Where are you going?”
“I saw you walk by”
“Is little Tommy ok?”

“It is breathtaking……”
And by that ….what he meant
Was to see it with your eyes
Literally left you breathing all spent

Then all of a sudden he woke up
Spilling cold coffee on his lap from a paper cup
“The baby is here”
He heard someone shout
As he walked toward the door
He heard a doctor say “Good lord ---Don’t let it out”
